Desolina was diagnosed with JGCT stage 1a ovarian cancer in 2015, when she had just turned 5 years old! We are so thankful that it was caught as early as it could be. We learned very quickly the importance of early detection, which is not common with the silence of ovarian cancer.
The NOCC has supported us with every step of her journey, and now we are on a mission to take ovarian cancer awareness to brand new heights. We are lucky to have met wonderful people along the way, especially friends like our dear friend Caryn Calarie, who passed away in 2020 from ovarian cancer, but will always be the Co-Captain of The Pittsburgh Tealers. We are also very lucky to form new friendships with people like, Meredith Mitstifer, who is a 20+ year survivor and serves as the Board Chair for the NOCC, and her son, Ryan Walton. They are fierce advocates who recently climbed to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro to promote Ovarian Cancer awareness!
Our friendship solidified when we met them while vacationing in Utah a couple summers ago, and it has only grown through the years. Desolina was able to spend time with them last fall, advocating both in Chicago and in Pittsburgh, and will be headed to Tuscon, AZ this fall for more awareness events! We will continue to raise awareness in hopes that one day, no one will die from this dreadful disease.
